Growing Up White in a Multicultural World

A forum where we can safely learn about whiteness and how to understand and talk about race.

June 22, 2019
9 am – 4 pm

We are living in a time when white supremacy and racism are mentioned in the news daily. The divide between white America and Americans of colors seems deeper and more complex then ever before. Comments and responses to the divide seem only to deepen it. I know on a daily basis I wonder, “can’t we get this right?”

Well…we are going to try. We are at least going to start.

We, Marilyn Dam-Rabolt and Lisa Decatorsmith, are inviting 15 white women to gather and start the conversation about being white and talking about race. We are fortunate to have two women of color, Mariana Castro PhD and Ngoc-Diep Nguyen PhD, both of whom are educators at University of Wisconsin, Madison, devoted to multicultural education and social justice, willing to facilitate our learning and understanding of the issues that arise around our whiteness and race in America.

The forum will be held as a Women’s Circle where each woman will have a chance to explore her own mind and feelings in a safe and well boundaried community. We will work towards bearing witness to the overt and subtle ways that issues of race and dominating whiteness continue to emerge in our daily lives. Our focus will be finding steps that each of us can take as a commitment to personal and societal transformation.

Grace and Grit: Circling To Tell The Truth About Aging

This program will be a nine session workshop to talk about, feel about, teach each other about, and figure ourselves out about the process of aging as it impacts us in our own particular lives.

We will be a Circle of 12 women between the ages of 55 and 100 gathering in a well boundaried, well held community of our contemporaries. We will be about fierce truth telling, support, deepening our understanding of natural law, individual development at this juncture of our lives, addressing issues of diversity and difference, and maintenance of health in self, the group and community. Our goal is to is to teach each other how to age with awareness, intention and skill. The power of our work will be the satisfaction and assuredness with which we live out our elder years.

What now? Let’s figure it out together.

Stay tuned for the details which will be forthcoming, and let me know if you are already interested.

“Thoroughly unprepared we take the step into the afternoon of life. Worse still, we take this step with the false assumption that our truths and ideals will serve us as hitherto. But we cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning. For what was great in the morning will be little at evening, and what in the morning was true will by evening become a lie.”

– Carl Jung

Middle Way Circle

The Challenge of Understanding and Caring about Others while remaining true to ourselves. Circles of Women are focused on growth and support in a well boundaried climate of trust and accountability. Self-awareness and self-knowledge help us to recognize signs of imbalance in our bodies and our lives. Self-management skills increase our ability to be in our authority and power as women and human beings. Our work is to find our voices and to speak them as contemporary women, connected to the wisdom of the ages. The world needs what women can do.

You are invited to join a Circle of Women, doing the work of understanding the process of our own individual development while deepening and supporting community life. The ability to be both self-differentiated and relational is the fundamental strength of feminine leadership.
