Growing Up White in a Multicultural World
A forum where we can safely learn about whiteness and how to understand and talk about race.
June 22, 2019
9 am – 4 pm
We are living in a time when white supremacy and racism are mentioned in the news daily. The divide between white America and Americans of colors seems deeper and more complex then ever before. Comments and responses to the divide seem only to deepen it. I know on a daily basis I wonder, “can’t we get this right?”
Well…we are going to try. We are at least going to start.
We, Marilyn Dam-Rabolt and Lisa Decatorsmith, are inviting 15 white women to gather and start the conversation about being white and talking about race. We are fortunate to have two women of color, Mariana Castro PhD and Ngoc-Diep Nguyen PhD, both of whom are educators at University of Wisconsin, Madison, devoted to multicultural education and social justice, willing to facilitate our learning and understanding of the issues that arise around our whiteness and race in America.
The forum will be held as a Women’s Circle where each woman will have a chance to explore her own mind and feelings in a safe and well boundaried community. We will work towards bearing witness to the overt and subtle ways that issues of race and dominating whiteness continue to emerge in our daily lives. Our focus will be finding steps that each of us can take as a commitment to personal and societal transformation.

This program will be a nine session workshop to talk about, feel about, teach each other about, and figure ourselves out about the process of aging as it impacts us in our own particular lives.
We will be a Circle of 12 women between the ages of 55 and 100 gathering in a well boundaried, well held community of our contemporaries. We will be about fierce truth telling, support, deepening our understanding of natural law, individual development at this juncture of our lives, addressing issues of diversity and difference, and maintenance of health in self, the group and community. Our goal is to is to teach each other how to age with awareness, intention and skill. The power of our work will be the satisfaction and assuredness with which we live out our elder years.
